Partner manager efficiency · 3 min read
The count question has no answer. Ask what the week is spent on instead.

Look up the right number of partners per partner manager and you will find answers that disagree by an order of magnitude. Three at one end, a hundred at the other. Analyst firms, consultancies and software vendors all publish a figure, and almost none of it comes from a survey. It is experienced judgement dressed in the visual grammar of a benchmark.
That should tell you something. A question this old, asked this often, with no settled answer after two decades, is usually a question that was never well formed.
Here is the better one. What does a partner manager actually spend the week doing?
ZINFI, which sells partner management software, puts it plainly in its own guidance: a partner manager spending more than 40% of their time on administrative coordination is underperforming regardless of individual ability. Two days out of five, gone on pulling pipeline out of the CRM, chasing certification status somewhere else and assembling a quarterly review by hand.
That is a striking thing for a software vendor to say about the people its product is sold to support, and it reframes the whole debate. If two days a week are already spent on reconnaissance, the constraint on your program is not how many partners each partner manager carries. It is that you are paying skilled relationship people to do data entry.
Hiring a second partner manager does not fix that. It buys you a second person doing the same two days of administration.
And the count is a poor proxy anyway. Channelnomics finds partner revenue is frequently split not 80/20 but 90/10, and in some programs the top fifty partners out of thousands produce nearly all the indirect revenue. A partner manager assigned sixty partners is rarely managing sixty relationships. They are managing the handful they can see clearly and reacting to whoever emailed last.
Efficiency in partner management is not speed. It is knowing on Monday morning which three partners are worth the week. Most partner managers do not know that, and no ratio will ever tell them.
